The Landscape Project

During this four-week creative course, children will discover how wool-blend felt sheets can become a different kind of artistic language. Instead of using paint and brushes, they will build a landscape through colour, shape, texture, layering, and hand stitching.

The course encourages children to look beyond familiar ways of making art. They will explore how colours and shapes can suggest distance, how layers create depth, and how the order in which pieces are assembled can transform a flat composition into a landscape with a sense of perspective.

From the first idea to the final stitch, each child will create an original textile landscape while developing their creativity, imagination, and confidence in making independent artistic choices.

This course is not about copying one example or making identical landscapes. Each child will be encouraged to imagine, experiment, and find an individual way to tell a visual story through felt.

The Four-Week Creative Journey

1. Week 1Imagining the Landscape

   Children will begin by imagining a place they would like to create. It may be inspired by nature, a favourite place, a memory, or an entirely imaginary world. They will sketch their composition and think about its main elements: the sky, land, trees, mountains, water, houses, or any other details they would like to include. This drawing will become the starting point for their felt artwork.

2. Week 2Creating Depth with Colour and Shape

   Using their sketches as a guide, the children will select colours and cut out the individual parts of their landscapes. They will explore how colour, size, position, and overlapping shapes can create a sense of distance. They will learn to distinguish between the background, middle ground, and foreground, and consider how each layer contributes to the complete composition.

3. Week 3Building the Landscape Layer by Layer

   The children will arrange their felt pieces and decide on the correct order for assembling them. They will begin with the elements that belong in the background and gradually work towards the foreground. As they sew each piece into place, they will see how separate shapes and colours come together to create depth, perspective, and atmosphere.

4. Week 4Completing the Artwork

   During the final lesson, the children will join the remaining elements, add smaller details, and complete their stitching. At the end of the course, each child will take home an original textile landscape—a unique artwork created from their own idea, developed layer by layer.
